Bowers & Wilkins is ushering in 50 years with new celebratory headphones – and they'll include a Lightning cable, but only from early 2017 Anniversaries are sort of a big deal for Bowers & Wilkins, and it has historically celebrated new milestones with an outlandish, limited edition product normally in the form of a loudspeaker with a price to make your eyes water. The long-standing high-end British audio company now celebrates its 50th year in existence, but instead of using loudspeakers in place of candles, this time it’s launching a brand new set of headphones in the form of the P9 Signature. The over-ear headphones are the largest pair the company has produced, eclipsing the P7 Wireless I reviewed – and enjoyed – recently. While these might not be the celebratory anniversary loudspeakers many might have expected, that’s not to say many loudspeaker principles haven’t been applied to the P9 Signature design. The P9 Signature are designed to emulate the effect of listening to a pair of loudspeakers, rather than being encased in a pair of close-backed cans. This effect is helped by the angling of the transducers, which are designed to more closely follow the angle of your ears so that there’s consistent space between them. The headband is decoupled from each of the earcups in order to limit any vibrations distorting or impacting the sound. A technique Bowers & Wilkins has taken from its 800 Series Diamond loudspeakers, too. As you would expect for a signature anniversary product, Bowers & Wilkins has said that all of the materials used were selected specifically for the P9. Unlike the company’s other headphones, which all come in black, these are only available in a brown and silver finish. It’s a classy design and makes them feel that much more special. Italian Saffiano leather is used that has a cross-hatched stamping technique applied. As the P9 Signature are a wired pair of cans, you’ll get a multitude of cables included; one with a three button remote, a standard 3.5mm cable, a 6.3mm cable for the Hi-Fi crowd and, from 2017 at least, a Lightning cable to make iPhone 7 users happy. There's a caveat, though. If you buy a pair of P9 Signatures now, you’ll need to register your pair with Bowers & Wilkins to receive your Lightning cable in early 2017, after which they’ll come included as standard. A travel case is also included and the headphones can fold down to a more compact size fore easy transportation. I’ve had the chance to audition the P9 Signature for a short amount of time ahead of launch. The large earcups feel cavernous against your ears. There's a good amount of space between your ears and the transducers through generous padding and some non-compressing material. This helps in providing a degree of both physical and audial comfort. There really is a spaciousness to the sound and plenty of detail and lots of controlled low frequency presence that's synonymous with the Bowers & Wilkins sound. I’m going to need more time to put them through their paces before making more definite judgements, however. So how much will it cost to join in on Bowers & Wilkins’ birthday celebrations? The P9 Signature will set you back £699.99, which doesn’t sound too outlandish all things considered. Especially if you remember the 40th anniversary loudspeakers had a price around £12,000, which actually begins to make the P9 Signature sound even more reasonable.

UTOPIA by TOURNAIRE: the most prestigious headphones in the world In 2016, Focal has associated with Tournaire jewellers to come up with a design for a truly exceptional pair of headphones, a unique work of art: Utopia by Tournaire. The fruit of this partnership was presented the 26th September 2016 at the Tournaire boutique, cour Vendôme in Paris. Tournaire jewellers have been renowned for many years for their symbolic and atypical designs. Focal and Tournaire share the same values, which include excellence and uniqueness. Both are renowned “Living Heritage Companies” (having received the Entreprises du Patrimoine Vivant label), and the two companies are famous throughout France and worldwide for their exceptional expertise. Very high-end headphones… Very high-end Utopia headphones were launched by Focal in June 2016. Their exceptionality (designed and manufactured in France, and featuring exclusive Focal technologies, a sleek design and high-end materials) soon made them a reference on the global audiophile headphones market. The design of these exceptional headphones was customised by the jeweller. The result is a unique product with new aesthetics designed and crafted by father and son, Philippe and Mathieu Tournaire. It bears the mark of the Triology, the symbol of Tournaire jewellers which represents the evolution of life. ... customised with jewels This universal symbol links the past, the present, and the future, represented respectively by the raw square, the triangle and the circle of abundance... The Trilogy is made of 18-karat gold mounted with a total of 6.5 carats of diamonds, entirely hand-crafted in the Tournaire workshops. This high tech and craftsman jewellery and work of art required more than a year’s work, making these headphones the most prestigious - and probably the most expensive - in the world: Utopia by Tournaire. The product was presented the 26th September 2016 at the Tournaire boutique in Paris. It is available in eight copies, on order at the price of €100.000 for the headphones alone, or for €110.000 with its dedicated stand. It was also the occasion to introduce the press and bloggers the new Focal Headphones Collection, mobile headphones Listen, and the two very high-end headphones Elear and Utopia.

Focal’s new headphones mix metal and leather for a high-end audio experience By Jacob Kastrenakes on June 14, 2016 08:00 am Email @jake_k 0
(Left: Elear / Right: Utopia. Image credit: Focal.) Share on Facebook (69) Tweet Share (4) Pin (1) Share After more than 30 years in the speaker business, French audio company Focal started taking on headphones in 2012. Today, its headphone line grows from four to seven units with the addition of three new models: one meant to rival a pair of Beats, and the other two meant for serious audiophiles. The first model is called Listen, and it's a pretty straightforward pair of closed-ear headphones. It has a plastic body and a 4.6-foot cord with a mic on it terminating in a 3.5mm headphone jack. There's no built-in wireless or active noise cancelation, though during a brief demo, the Listen did seem to block out noise pretty effectively. They'll sell for $249. The Listen are comfortable, but there's nothing particularly compelling about them. On first (ahem) listen, they didn't appear to deliver the audio quality you'd expect from a $249 pair of headphones. And while the Listen’s reliance on a headphone jack seems completely normal today, it’s very possible that it’ll soon limit them, as new smartphones begin to eschew the standard 3.5mm input. Focal Listen headphones. Image credit: Focal. The other two headphones are a bit more compelling and feel like the products Focal was actually interested in making. The cheaper of the two is called the Elear and will sell for $999; the other model, called the Utopia, will go for $3,999. In both cases, Focal says its intention was to closely reproduce the feel of listening to a nice set of speakers, rather than tightly clamped headphones. I only spent a few minutes with them, so I can't fairly say whether they deliver on that goal. But during a short demo, they sounded full and clean (although, they seemed to have a closer soundstage than I'm used to.) When paired with a high-end DAC and amplifier, Focal claims that the Elear can hit frequencies between 5Hz and 23kHz, while the Utopia can reach from 5Hz to 50kHz, with an impedance of 32 ohms for each.The headphones look industrial, but they feel luxurious The Elear and Utopia — in case the latter’s name didn't suggest it — are basically meant for luxurious home listening, and they have a comfort and build quality that lives up to their goal. Both headphones have open backs, with grated metal curving across each model's earpieces. The Elear has an aluminum body and leather headband; the Utopia mixes metal with carbon fiber for reduced weight, while using pitted leather on both the headband and ear cups. The look is almost industrial. I don't hate it, but there’s something to be said for the vibe of a pair of headphones matching the music they’re best at reproducing. Focal says these headphones are meant for pretty much anything, and they sort of look that way, like they’re designed to get the job done and nothing more. While I didn't spend enough time with either model to say how it feels after being worn through an entire album, I was surprised at how the size and heft of both felt almost unnoticeable once they were on my head. Their style was, of course, unnoticeable at that point, too — so, it’s worth weighing which parts of a headphone you value. Both models come with a 13-foot cord that terminates in a quarter-inch stereo jack. That can sound excessive, but it’s not out of line with the audiophile experience Focal is pitching. If you have these headphones hooked up to your stereo, you’re going to want a cord that can stretch across the room to your easy chair. These ought to be able to do that. Both allow their cables to be detached, too, so they can be swapped out for something shorter if you’re planning to sit right beside your audio source. Focal will be releasing all three models over the next month. The Listen will be available starting July 15th. The Elear and Utopia will go on sale a bit earlier, beginning June 29th.
